BioCharacter: Dr. Raymond Stantz
Fandom: Ghostbusters
Background: A professor of parapsychology at Columbia University in New York, he was fired along with inventor Egon Spengler and business administrator Peter Venkman. He was an expert in metallurgy and paranormal history. The three founded a poltergeist extermination service called the “Ghostbusters” out of a dilapidated firehouse, and soon gained popularity for their work. Eventually, along with his teammates, he discovered that the apartment building that Dayna Barrett was living in was a Sumerian pyramid dedicated to the summoning of the ancient god, Gozer. It was his inadvertent thought that gave Gozer form in the way of the Staypufft marshmallow man.
Due to all the suits from the city after the release of the ghosts from their containment unit, they lost the station and their business and they all had to return to work in the private sector. Ray opened a bookstore called Ray’s Occult Books. When Dayna Barrett once again started experiencing unusual phenomena around her infant, he joined his old comrades to research the cause of the mishap. Posing as city workers, they dug down into the street and discovered a river of pink slime. When tried for the damage done to a New York city street, a collected sample unleashed the Scalerri brothers when the Judge was angrily passing sentence.
Freed from all charges, the Ghostbusters resumed their investigation of the museum and strange happenings surrounding Dayna Barrett and her young son. During his investigation, Ray became enthralled with the image of Vigo, though he shook it off. He joined Egon in continued research that finally discovered the slime was negatively charged from the emotions of the people in the city and they could create positively charged slime.
Using the positively charged slime, they animated the Statue of Liberty and invaded the slime-molded museum. The New Years celebration outside and the symbol of the city ended up weakening Vigo’s powers so that they were able to rescue Dayna Barrett’s son, but immediately afterward Vigo invaded Ray’s body and they were forced to use the slime on him. He was exorcised, but left in a dazed, delighted stupor and professing his love for everyone for the rest of the movie.
Personality: Ray is very much a child in how he acts. He’s incredibly enthusiastic about everything and anything that he can learn. He is friendly with almost everyone he meets, and ends up inadvertently being the bravest one of the group in his ambition to get the full story. He enjoys reading and talking to people. He doesn’t quite find the enjoyment in bland research that Egon does, but he does enjoy educating people and solving mysteries.
He also has a deeply repressed side. He’s never seen pursuing a romantic interest, but because of his dream concerning the ghost I believe he has high expectations. Real women are intimidating to him, so he’s unable to interact with them well. It’s why most of his coworkers early on were men. Being that he’s such a child, he’s never really had to grow up and deal with a mature relationship.
He’s also a skeptic with little actual religious meaning. He looks at it all as evidence of supernatural activity than the presence of deities or unexplainable events. Even having met Gozer, he didn’t think to address himself as a god, which signifies to me that it wasn’t even a consideration and he couldn’t even consider lying both.
Physical Description: Ray is an average looking man with brown hair and around six feet tall. He typically wears casual clothes when he’s not in his jumpsuit. He frequently smiles and moves vigorously, as he’s frequently excited.
